Moving In: What You Need to Know Before Settling Into Your New Home

Moving day is almost here! To help you stay organized and stress-free, here’s a simple timeline and checklist to keep things on track.

4 Weeks Before Moving

  • Book your removalist and confirm insurance for the move and new home.
  • Arrange essential services: water, electricity, gas, internet, phone. Consider hiring a tradesperson if needed.
  • Get packing boxes from your removalist and clearly label each box by room.
  • Request time off work for moving day.
  • Update your postal address  and arrange mail redirection.
  • Notify banks, doctors, schools and other service providers of your new address.

1 Week Before Moving

  • Confirm your removalist booking.
  • Inform your lawyer of your move date to ensure all completion payments are processed before you collect your keys.

1 Day Before Moving

  • Defrost and unplug your fridge and freezer.
  • Gather all keys to return to your landlord or lawyer.
  • Record your water, gas and electricity meter readings.

Moving Day Checklist

Upon arriving at your new home, inspect the following:

  • Bathrooms: basins, toilets, mirrors, shower screens
  • Kitchen fittings and appliances
  • Walls, floors, and tiles
  • Check all doors and windows open, close, and lock properly — and that you have all keys
  • Confirm water, gas, and electricity are connected and working; agree on meter readings with the owner or manager
  • Test gas and fire dectectors
  • Collect appliance manuals and learn how to use them
  • Take a final walk around your new home to ensure you’re happy
