Moving In: What You Need to Know Before Settling Into Your New Home
Moving day is almost here! To help you stay organized and stress-free, here’s a simple timeline and checklist to keep things on track.
4 Weeks Before Moving
- Book your removalist and confirm insurance for the move and new home.
- Arrange essential services: water, electricity, gas, internet, phone. Consider hiring a tradesperson if needed.
- Get packing boxes from your removalist and clearly label each box by room.
- Request time off work for moving day.
- Update your postal address and arrange mail redirection.
- Notify banks, doctors, schools and other service providers of your new address.
1 Week Before Moving
- Confirm your removalist booking.
- Inform your lawyer of your move date to ensure all completion payments are processed before you collect your keys.
1 Day Before Moving
- Defrost and unplug your fridge and freezer.
- Gather all keys to return to your landlord or lawyer.
- Record your water, gas and electricity meter readings.
Moving Day Checklist
Upon arriving at your new home, inspect the following:
- Bathrooms: basins, toilets, mirrors, shower screens
- Kitchen fittings and appliances
- Walls, floors, and tiles
- Check all doors and windows open, close, and lock properly — and that you have all keys
- Confirm water, gas, and electricity are connected and working; agree on meter readings with the owner or manager
- Test gas and fire dectectors
- Collect appliance manuals and learn how to use them
- Take a final walk around your new home to ensure you’re happy
