Hungary's hotter summers are encouraging more homeowners to invest in home cooling.
A fan may be enough for one property, while another may benefit from a split air conditioner or a whole-house ducted system. The right choice depends on how the property gains heat, how much cooling it needs and what you're prepared to spend.
"Many people compare air conditioners before they've worked out what their home actually needs," said Alex Markus, Chief Executive of City-Lets Ltd. "The property should determine the type of system, not the other way around."
1. Start With Your Home, Not the Product
Before comparing brands or prices, look at the property itself.
A top-floor apartment usually needs more cooling than a ground-floor home. Large west-facing windows, poor insulation and older buildings gain heat much more quickly than well-insulated homes with external shading and modern windows.
If you're building a new home , ducted air conditioning is usually much easier to install because the ductwork can be fitted before ceilings are finished. Retrofitting ductwork into an existing home is possible, but it usually involves considerably more building work and expense.
2. Understand What Each Cooling System Does
Fans move air around the room but do not lower its temperature. They're inexpensive to buy and run, making them suitable for cooler summer days or evening use.
Air coolers (léghűtők) use water to cool the airflow through evaporation. They generally cost between 15,000 Ft and 90,000 Ft. They cool more effectively than a fan but cannot match the performance of an air conditioner during prolonged hot weather.
Portable air conditioners actively cool the air and vent warm air outside through an exhaust hose. They're useful where installing a split system isn't practical, although they are usually noisier and less efficient.
Split air conditioners are the most common choice in Hungary because they provide efficient cooling, quiet operation and winter heating from a single unit. A typical system costs between 130,000 Ft and 450,000 Ft, with installation usually adding 50,000-100,000 Ft.
Ducted air conditioning distributes cooled air through ceiling vents connected to a central unit. Only the vents are visible inside the home. Complete systems typically cost 800,000 Ft to 3.5 million Ft, making them most practical for new homes or major renovations.
3. Look Beyond the Purchase Price
Installation, electricity consumption and maintenance all add to the overall cost of ownership.
Correct sizing is equally important. A system that's too small will struggle during heatwaves, while an oversized unit can switch on and off too frequently, reducing efficiency and increasing electricity consumption.
Higher energy-efficiency ratings usually cost more initially but can reduce electricity bills over many years.
4. Installation Matters
Fans and air coolers are ready to use immediately. Portable air conditioners only require an opening for the exhaust hose.
Split systems require professional installation. Pipe length, electrical work and the position of the outdoor unit can all affect the final installation cost.
Ducted systems require space above ceilings or within the roof for concealed ductwork. Installing them during construction is usually far less expensive than fitting them into a completed home.
5. Consider How Long You'll Own the Property
If you're planning to stay in the property for many years, running costs and maintenance deserve as much attention as the purchase price.
Modern inverter split systems can provide both cooling and heating, making them a practical year-round solution for many homes. Ducted systems cost considerably more to install but can cool multiple rooms through a single concealed system, making them easier to integrate into new-build homes.
"Most homes don't need the biggest air conditioner available," said Alex Markus, Chief Executive of City-Lets Ltd. "They need one that's correctly sized. An undersized unit will struggle during extreme heat, while an oversized system can cycle on and off too frequently, reducing efficiency and increasing electricity consumption."
Understanding how the property gains heat, how the system will be installed and what it will cost to run usually leads to a better decision than comparing purchase prices alone.
